SYRA = Sharon Youth Robotics Association
We are a community organization in Sharon Massachusetts, dedicated to the support of FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) competition among our youth. Our teams compete in Massachusetts and other Northeast venues. All of our teams meet together every week during the fall FLL competition season.
A typical season for an SYRA FLL team starts with our organizational meeting at the end of the summer. Eligible Sharon students are ages 9-14, grades 4-8. New members are oriented, and teams are organized, mainly through self-selection. Subsequent weekly SYRA meetings (throughout the season) are focused training (early meeting), mentoring, and as time goes on, internal competitions. The weekly SYRA meetings supplement what would be expected to be at least weekly meetings for the individual teams, as they work toward the design and programming of their own robots to meet the FLL challenge. Mentoring and training is always available, both for the team members and the coaches, from our experienced members (who have graduated to the next level of competition, the FIRST Tech Challenge).
As the time for tournaments approaches (late November through December, and the Saturday before Christmas for the Eastern MA and Central MA state tournaments), internal competition will hone the teams skills for their time "in the sun".
We also participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge. We currently have a several Sharon high school age teams including Team Unlimited (FTC 0001). But . . . there is no reason that number can't increase! Sharon students of high school age are welcome at our organizational meeting to discuss setting up new FTC teams, as well!
If you are interested in robotics and competition, you are welcome to attend our meetings, when they resume in the Fall of 2019. The more, the merrier!
